Papilloedema Flashcards
define
specific term for bilateral disc swelling secondary to raised ICP
what should all patients with papilloedema be suspected of having?
SOL until proven otherwise
three factors that influence ICP
brain volume
blood volume
CSF volume
what happens if there is compression of blood vessels in the cranial cavity?
brain ischaemia and swelling with herniation through the foramen magnum, brainstem compression and death
causes of increased CSF volume
obstruction to circulation
overproduction
reduced absorption
presentation of papilloedema
blurred vision
headaches
diagnosis of papilloedema
CNII examination
immediate scan
what does a CN II examination involve?
optic disc visual acuity pupil exam visual field assessment colour vision
what happens to papilloedema after treatment?
swelling will settle down causing the discs to become atrophic leading to reduced visual function (potential for blindness)
presentation of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH)
postural headache bilateral disc swelling vision loss pulsatile tinnitus loss of disc edges BP normal
diagnosis of IIH
lumbar puncture
