What is the most common seizure in children and adults, originating from the temporal lobe, and in the majority of cases, no pathology is found?
Complex partial seizure
Remember a complex partial involves loss of consciousness whereas a simple partial seizure does not.
The most common type of neuropathologic damage seen in individuals with Complex Partial Seizures
Hippocampal sclerosis
This seizure type is a medical emergency and involves recurrent seizures that fail to cease and can result in permanent brain damage
Status Epilepticus
Describe a febrile seizure
Seizure in children that only occurs in the presence of a fever. Focal or generalized and short duration
Must rule out bacterial meningitis
What are the most common lesions seen in patients with generalized seizures? How common are they?
Congenital cerebral changes including: malformation, infarct, tumor, stroke, AVMs, trauma.
Surprisingly most generalized seizures show NO primary lesions by imaging or exam.
What are some metabolic causes of seizure?
Uremia, ETOH, Drugs
What vascular diseases can lead to seizure?
AVMs or stroke
