Spina bifida cystica
congenital, vertebrae don’t close all the way during development, leaving spinal cord exposed (cyst filled with cerebrospinal fluid is large and very exposed)
Spina bifida occulta
congenital, vertebrae only partially cover spinal cord
avulsion fracture
caused when a ligament is pulled
intracapsular fracture
occurs within the capsule of a joint
colles fracture
break in the radius
comminuted fracture
splintery bone break
greenstick fracture
half the bone breaks (common in young children because cartilage is not fully calcified yet)
oblique fracture
slanted break
open (compound) fracture
bone breaks through skin
spiral fracture
caused by twisting of the bone
transverse
break straight across
simple (closed)
ex. hairline fracture. break remains closed
impacted
bone breaks by pushing into itself
scoliosis
side-to-side curvature of spine - abnormal lateral curvature of the spinal column
kyphosis
front-to-back curvature of spine - abnormal posterior spinal curvature
