Degenerative CNS Disorders Flashcards
dementia
degenerative. Deterioration in mental capacity
Alzheimer disease
degenerative. deterioration in mental capacity, progressive degeneration of neurons in the brain. Amnesia, apraxia, agnosia.
amnesia
loss of memory
apraxia
inability to properly use familiar objects
agnosia
inability to receive and understand outside stimuli
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
aka Lou Gehrig disease. degenerative disease of the motor neurons leading to loss of muscular control and death
Huntington chorea
degenerative. hereditary disease with uncontrollable jerking movements and progressive loss of neural control.
multiple sclerosis (MS)
degenerative. destruction of myelin sheath (demylination) leading to muscle weakness, unsteady gait, and paresthesia (odd sensations of tingling, stinging, etc), extreme fatigue, and some paralysis
myasthenia gravis
degenerative. disease with muscle weakness. Cant be treated to avoid the overproduction of antibodies that block neurotransmitters from sending proper nerve impulses to skeletal muscles
Parkinson disease
degeneration of nerves in the brain, causes tremors, weakness of muscles, and difficulty in walking. treated with drugs that increase dopamine levels in the brain, treatment helps relieves symptoms but does not cure the disease
