Pathogens - Lecture 1 Flashcards
Define pathogenesis
The ability of an organism to cause disease
Define pathogen
Any organism or agent that produces to produces a disease
Define virulence
Intensity of disease/ degree of harm caused
Define acute infection
Sudden/ rapid, usually short-lived
Can be mild or severe
Define chronic infection
Develop slowly, long lasting and/or recurrent
Define healthcare-associated infection (HCAI)
Results from a direct treatment in a healthcare setting
Define opportunistic
Caused by organisms that DON’T normally infect healthy hosts
Define primary infection
Initial infection within a patient
Define secondary infection
Infections that follow a primary infection
Define septicaemia
Life-threatening condition arising from pathogenic organisms in the blood
Define sepsis
Host response to infection
Define bacteremia
Bacteria present in the blood
Define latent infection
Appears a long time after the initial infection
What does Group A Streptococcus (GAS) cause?
Throat and skin infections
What does Group B Streptococcus (GBS)?
Gut/ urinary tract/ vagina
UTI, skin, bloodstream, pneumonia, soft-tissue bone and joint infections
