Pathogens Flashcards
What is a pathogen
-carries and expresses virulence genes
virulence is defined by 2 features
invasiveness
toxigenicity
invasiveness
the ability of the microorganism to become established in the host, to overcome the host defenses and to spread in the tissues
toxigenicity
the capacity of the microbe to produce substances known as toxins that damage specific tissues of the host
examples of invasiveness
adhesins capsules enzymes invasins T3SS, T4SS
Adhesins
-promote specific attachment to host cell surfaces
Afimbrial adhesins:glyco/lipid proteins
Fimbriae/pili: polymers
capsule
- prevent destruction by immune cells
- not ONLY a virulence factor
Lecithinase
degrades phosphatidylecholine and causes lysis of host cells
gas gangrene: how does it function
uses lecithinase to lyse host cells
uses hyaluronidates and collagenase to destroy ECM
T3SS fxns? and mechanism?
- forms a channel through all membranes and periplasmic space. Injects bacterial proteins into the host
fxns:
1. invasion of host cells
2. control of host cells
3. block phagosome maturation
infectious diseases cause
pathogen growth
intoxications cause
presence of a specific toxin
exotoxin
secreted into the surrounding as the bacterial pathogen grows
-Leads to a cell-mediated response, activates antibodies
endotoxins
part of the bacterial pathogen
A subunit
(exotoxin)
modifies a target inside the host
