pathogens Flashcards
infectious disease
Definition: Diseases caused by pathogens that can spread from one organism to another.
Examples: Flu, tuberculosis, malaria.
Pathogens
Microorganisms that cause disease.
types of pathogens
Bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, prions, and parasites.
Bacteria
Characteristics: Single-celled organisms, can be harmful or beneficial.
Example: Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes tuberculosis.
Treatment: Often treatable with antibiotics.
Viruses
Characteristics: Non-living particles, need a host cell to replicate.
Example: Influenza virus causes the flu.
Treatment: Not treatable with antibiotics; antivirals can be used
Fungi
Characteristics: Eukaryotic organisms, can cause infections on skin or inside the body.
Example: Candida albicans causes thrush.
Treatment: Treatable with antifungal medications.
Protozoa
Characteristics: Single-celled eukaryotes, often cause disease in humans.
Example: Plasmodium causes malaria.
Treatment: Treatable with specific antiprotozoal medications.
Prions
Characteristics: Misfolded proteins, cause neurodegenerative diseases.
Example: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Treatment: No known cure; prevention is key.
Parasites
Characteristics: Organisms that live on or in a host, often harming it.
Example: Tapeworms, lice.
Treatment: Treated with antiparasitic drugs.
Parasites
Characteristics: Organisms that live on or in a host, often harming it.
Example: Tapeworms, lice.
Treatment: Treated with antiparasitic drugs.
