Pathogen Virulence - Virulence Factors Flashcards
Define Virulence
The ability of a pathogen to cause disease
Define Pathogenesis:
How a disease/ pathogen infects and spreads
Adherence Factors:
Bacteria that colonize mucosal sites by using pili / fimbriae to adhere/ stick to cells
Endotoxins
A pathogenic toxic that is bound to its outer membrane and cannot spread further into the body
Exotoxins
A protein that is produced and released by a pathogen
Impacts caused by Endotoxins
Fever, changes in blood temperature, inflammation, lethal shock/ other lethal events
Major Exotoxin Categories
Cytotoxins, neurotoxins, enterotoxins
Purpose of Flagella
Allows for the bacteria to move around - (corkscrew movement)
Propels the cell forward and burrow into the flesh
Colonisation Factor
Protein that allows for a pathogen to colonise the host’s body
Invasion Factor
Protein that allows pathogens to colonise the host’s body
Toxin
Protein produced and released by a pathogen
