9.1 Homeostasis Responding to Change Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Maintenance of a constant internal environment, mediated by feedback systems
What is a catabolic reaction?
Chemical reaction where large molecules are broken down into smaller ones. This usually stimulates the release of energy (ATP)
What is an anabolic reaction?
Chemical Reaction where large molecules are built up. This typically involves an input of energy.
What is the tolerance range of an organism?
The range where a particular organism can survive.
Provide an example of an anabolic reaction:
The production of glucose during photosynthesis
Provide an example of an anabolic reaction:
The production of glucose during photosynthesis
Describe the role of homeostasis
Ensuring that all metabolic reactions in the body occur at a rate where the organism can survive.
What is a stimulus?
Change in an organism’s environment that brings about a response
What is a receptor?
A group of cells that receives stimuli
What is the order of the stimulus response organism?
