Negative and Positive Feedback Flashcards
What is the order of the stimulus response model?
STIMULUS - RECEPTOR - CONTROL CENTRE - EFFECTOR - RESPONSE
What is a stimulus?
Change in the environment of an organism that triggers a response
What is a receptor?
Organs or cells that detect change in the internal and external environment. Stimuli are detected by receptors
What does the control centre do?
When the receptor detects stimulus, it’s sent to the control centre, where the control centre acts accordingly, deciding what the body has to do.
Where are body’s control centres?
Normally the brain, but can also be other organs e.g pancreas or the thyroid.
Photoreceptors are?
Light stimulus
Mechanoreceptors are?
Mechanical forces e.g pressure and vibrations
Chemoreceptors are?
Detectors of the body’s chemical presences
Thermoreceptors are?
Temperature receptors
Nociceptors are?
Pain detection/ perception
What is an effector?
Parts of the body that are used to carry out the required action
Describe muscular effector?
Muscles may expand or contract, sending electrical impulses via the nervous system.
Describe effectors in glands?
Glands release hormones (chemical messages) or other (sweat or tears)
What is the response stage?
The body responds, and returns to homeostasis
Give an example relating to thermoregulation that describes what the body may do for negative feedback
High internal temperature - reduce the temperature to return to homeostatic levels
Low internal temperature - increase the internal temperature to “ “
