Patho unit 2 Neurons and CNS/PNS Flashcards
Includes the brain and spinal cord
the Central Nervous System (CNS)
In charge of rapid functions and activities
The nervous system
Includes all neurons outside of the brain and spinal cord
The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Divisions of PNS
Somatic, Autonomic, Enteric
Somatic NS
voluntary control of skeletal muscle
Enteric NS
in the gut, digestive functions
Autonomic NS (ANS)
Involuntary functions, divided further into parasympathetic and sympathetic
Sympathetic NS
“fight or flight” response, catabolic( break down, release energy), counter-regulatory (raises bp and blood glucose)
Parasympathetic NS
“rest and repair” or “rest and digest”
anabolic (builds, requires energy), regulatory ( lowers bp, and bg)
Types of neurons
Sensory, Motor, Associational
Sensory Neurons
carry information from environment to body and from body to CNS.
Ascending pathway
also called afferent pathway, carries sensory info from body to CNS.
Travels up the dorsal(back) of spinal cord
Motor Neurons
Carry info from CNS to body
Descending pathway
also called efferent pathway, carries info from CNS to body. Travels down ventral (front) of spinal cord
Associational neurons
connect neurons to neurons
