Patho Prerequisite Learning Flashcards
Nucleus
- Control center
- Contains genes that control a cell and direct the cells activities
Major Cellular Functions
- Movement
- Conductivity
- Metabolic absorption
- Secretion
- Excretion
- Respiration
- Reproduction
- Communication
Cytoplasm
All of the cell contents between the plasma membrane and the nucleus
- Organelles and Cytosol
Ribosomes
- Sites of protein synthesis
- Have 2 subunits
- Can be free, attached to the ER, or in the mitochondria
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
A network of membranes that form sacs or tubules
- Rough: studded with ribosomes, connected to nuclear membrane
- Smooth: makes phospholipids, fats and steroids
Golgi Complex
Where proteins are modified and packaged for excretion/transport to their end destination
Lysosomes
Dissolving bodies, will digest a cell and return organelles to be reused
- Formed in Golgi Complex & have up to 40 digestive enzymes
- Contain a H+ pump to keep pH around 5
Peroxisomes
Destroy materials for the cell
- Common in liver & kidneys (detox function)
- Break down fatty acids
- Create free radicals
Mitochondria
“Powerhouses”, generate ATP
Cytosol
The solvent and solutes that make up the soluble part of the cytoplasm
Solvent
Does the dissolving (ex: water)
Solute
Gets dissolved (ex: salts)
Plasma Membrane
A lipid bilayer that separates the cells internal environment from the external environment
