Patho Exam 2 Flashcards
Hypopituitarism
Can be characterized by the absence of one orm more anterior pituitary hormones or the complete failure of all anterior pituitary hormone functions
What is SIADH?
When the kidneys are exposed to excessive amounts of antidiuertic hormone (ADH)
What causes SIADH?
Post surgery, ectopic production by cancers, pulmonary infections, CNS disorders
What is diabetes insipidus?
when there are insufficient amounts of ADH
Neurogenic DI
insufficient amounts of ADH secreted due to lesions of hypthalamus or posterior pituitary….caused by brain tumors, stroke, infections, head trauma
Nephrogenic DI
Inadequate response to ADH due to renal tubule damage…caused by several renal diseases and drug toxicity (e.g. lithium)
Thyroid hormone (T3/T4)
produced by follicle cells of the thyroid gland
What are the physiological effects of thyroid hormones
Stimulates metabolism, normal maturation of the nervous system, promotes effects of growth hormone, increases target cell responsiveness to catecholamines
Insulin
secreted by the beta cells in the islets of langerhans
has a very short half life
secretion stimulated
