EBP-CH1 Flashcards
What is the Domain of Nursing?
Medicine-Identification and treatment of a disease condition based on specific evaluation of signs and symptoms, standard of care, evidence on likelihood of positive outcome
Nursing-identification and treatment of the patient’s response to an actual or potential health problem
Collaborative problem-actual or potential physiological complication that nurses monitor to detect a change in the patient status
What is evidence based practice?
Evidence based practice allows one to systematically use the best available evidence from research with the integration of individual clinical expertise, as well as the patient’s values and preferences, to make clinical decisions
What is nursing research?
Research is the systematic, rigorous, critical investigation that aims to answer questions about nursing phenomena
The methods used by nurse researchers are the same methods used by other disciplines; the difference is that nurses study questions relevant to nursing practice
Nurse researches follow the steps of the scientific process
There are two basic types of research — quantitative and qualitative
Quantitative Nursing Research
- Seeks to understand the meaning of human experience
- usually conducted in natural settings
- seeks to DESCRIBE experiences
- subjective approach
- theory generating
Quantitative Nursing Research
- Seeks to test relationships or answer a question
- explains cause-and-effect relationships
- seeks to DESCRIBE phenomena
- Objectivity is important
- Theory testing
Sources for Literature Review
Primary: Research articles and books by the original author(s) who did the research or proposed the theoretical framework
Secondary: Published articles or books that are written by persons other than the individual who conducted the research study or developed the theory. These articles or books discuss studies, synthesize findings, and present evidence from multiple primary sources.
