radiation, drugs, chemical substances, and infectious agents
1 - 5% of newborns are affected with TORCH agents, which are:
microcephaly, hydrocephalus, and thrombocytopenia
this is a rare metabolic disorder that affects approx. 1 in 15K infants in the US. this is a deficiency of the liver enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. Without it children will die.
