What is the ductus arteriosus?
A
The foetal vessel that connects the aorta to the pulmonary artery. It allows blood flow to bypass the lungs where it is not needed until birth

A
Most common congenital defect in dogs

What can Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) cause?
A
Causes left sided heart failure and death if not treated

Clinical signs?
A
Loud machinery type heart murmur
Poor growth

Treatment..
A
Closure of the vessel with surgery or implantation of a coil
Excellent prognosis with treatment
