When to use Passé Composé
→ When talking about one-time
→ When talking about actions that took place in the past on a specific occasion
(The tense places emphasis on the results of consequences of an action)
→ Listing sequential past actions one after another
→ Introduce a new past action that interrupted another that was already in progress
Example: Mais un jour, pendant que je parlais avec un agriculteur, j’ai reçu un appel. (Reçu is the world to look out for)
How to Conjugate in Passé Composé
Passé Composé is written the following format
Pronoun + Present tense of avoir or être + past participle (participe passé)
How to form the participe passé
For regular verbs use the following conjugations for all pronouns
-er → é
-ir → i
-re → u
Irregular verbs have no pattern and have to be memorized
Avoir or Être
Most verbs use avoir, however, être is used in the following cases…
→ With reflexive verbs
→ With verbs of movement: mourir, venir, naître, arriver, partir, etc
→ In passive sentence where the passé composé is like an adjective
