Q

with a decrease in air pressure there is a decrease or increase in performance?

A

Decrease. Low air pressure is when the air is less dense.

Q

What is the function of the flaps?

A

Increase lift and induced drag. greater lift for shortfield takeoffs and greater drag on landing, which allows us to fly a steeper approach.

Q

What type of engine does the archer have?

A
  • The Piper Archer III is powered by a Lycoming IO-360-B3E engine, which is a four-cylinder, air-cooled, horizontally-opposed, fuel-injected engine.
  • The engine is rated at 180 horsepower at 2700 RPM and is capable of propelling the aircraft to a maximum cruise speed of around 140 knots.
  • The engine is equipped with a fuel-injection system that ensures proper fuel/air mixture for efficient operation, and is equipped with an electronic ignition system for reliable starting and operation.
  • It has a TBO (Time Before Overhaul) of 2000 hours, which means that the engine has to be overhauled after 2000 hours of operation.
]mention the proper procedures for operating the engine, such as warm up, shutdown, and emergency procedures.

Q

How does carb heat system work?

A

Carb heat is unfiltered air coming off the exhaust manifold that is rerouted to carb to help melt carb ice.

8
Q

Why is the a drop in rpm when applying carb heat?

A

hotter air is less dense than cold air, automatically enriches the fuel mixture, which decreases engine performance.

Q

What are the 2 main fundamentals of a Gyroscope?

A
  1. Rigidity in space. Newtons 1st law, a body in motion tends to move at a constant speed and direction unless disturbed by external force.
  2. Precession. when a deflective force is applied to a the rim of. stationary gyro roter the roter moves in the direction of the force. When the roter is spinning the same forces cause the roter to move in a different direction, although the force had been applied to the roter 90 degrees later. turning and acceleration, and deceleration mess with gyroscopic.

17
Q

How does the static system work?
AS=s+ra
V=s+l
A=s+re

A

It operates on the principle of pressure differentials. Comparing static, to ram pressure (or leak pressure)
Airspeed indicator compares static to ram pressure. the static system is getting the air from the current altitude so it’s an accurate comparison with the ram pressure. the static fills the chamber, while the ram pressure goes through the pitot tube and inflates a little wafer
Vertical speed indicator, changes in pressure to a calibrated leak in the instrument to tell how fast we are moving up or down.
Altimeter compares static pressure to a reference pressure, which we set in the tiny window. specifically the static pressure coming in will be a lower density/less pressure than the wafer -which was established on the ground, and the wafer will expand if when the air is less dense.

18
Q

First indication of Carb Ice

A

A reduction in RPM

19
Q

What is detonation and Pre ignition

A

Detonation is the uncontrolled firing of fuel to air mixture within a cylinder caused by high temps or low grade fuel.
Pre ignition is when the fuel to air mixture ignites early, causes by hot spot in chamber often created by a small carbon deposit on a spark plug.

20
Q

What to do if detonation or pre ignition is happening?

A

land as soon as possible, could destroy the engine.

21
Q

What should be done if a “bad” rpm drop while checking manetos?

A

increase rpms by 500 or so, increase mixture, leave for a minute then check again to see if it burned off excessive carbon on mags.

22
Q

What is minimum safe altitude over a non-congested area?

A

500 feet AGL

23
Q

What is CFIT

A

Controlled Flight Into Terrain

24
Q

How long will battery last if Alternator fails?

A

No more than 30 minutes
