Parturition and Lactation Flashcards
Parturition
The process of delivery of the feotus(childbirth) by vigorous contractions of the uterus is called parturition.
How is parturition induced
a neuroendocrine mechanism
what is the neuroendocrine mechanism?
signals from the foetus and placenta induces mild contraction called foetal ejection reflex which stimulates secretion of oxytocin which inturn stimulates stronger contraction. the simultaneous reflex leads to the expulsion of the foetus through the birth canal. the placenta is also expelled out of the uterus.
What do doctors inject to induce delivery?
Oxytocin(pitocin)
Lactation
Towards the end of pregnancy, the mammary glands undergo differentiation and releases milk by the process of lactation.
colostrum
the milk produced during the initial few days of lactation is called colostrum.
what does colostrum contain?
antibodies that develop resistance for the new born babies.
what is the name of the milk produced during the initial few days of lactation?
Colostrum.
