What is Hydrops Uteri?
A
Excessive amounts of foetal fluid in the uterus. Presents as a very distended abdomen.

What issues dies Hydrops uteri cause?
A
Prevents the guts from filling - pregnancy toxaemia & energy problems.

Treatment for hydros uteri
A
- Conservative - if healthy & close to calving - beware uterine inertia at calving
- Uterine drainage - temporary relief - risk infection & ending pregnancy
- inducing birth - risk loosing calf
- elective C section

To induce birth 4/5-100/150d
A
Give PGF2alpha analogue - induces luteolysis

To induce birth 150-170d
A
The placenta produces additional progesterone - PGF2alpha anaglogue wouldn’t be sufficient
Need additional long acting corticosteroid.

Vaginal prolapse
A
occurs late in gestation in older animals - excessive relaxation of pelvic tissues & increased intra abdominal pressure.

Replacing a vaginal prolapse
A
- epidural analgesia
- clean & replace
- Buhner suture to hold in place - can’t calve through these - remove at 1st stage partition.
