What is Hydrops Uteri?

A

Excessive amounts of foetal fluid in the uterus. Presents as a very distended abdomen.

What issues dies Hydrops uteri cause?

A

Prevents the guts from filling - pregnancy toxaemia & energy problems.

Treatment for hydros uteri

A
  1. Conservative - if healthy & close to calving - beware uterine inertia at calving
  2. Uterine drainage - temporary relief - risk infection & ending pregnancy
  3. inducing birth - risk loosing calf
  4. elective C section

A

Give PGF2alpha analogue - induces luteolysis

A

The placenta produces additional progesterone - PGF2alpha anaglogue wouldn’t be sufficient
Need additional long acting corticosteroid.

A
  1. epidural analgesia
  2. clean & replace
  3. Buhner suture to hold in place - can’t calve through these - remove at 1st stage partition.
