Parts of the skull Flashcards

1
Q

meninges

A
  • the three membranes enclosing the CNS
  • dura mater (hardest and closest to the skull)
  • arachnoid mater (spiderweb)
  • pia mater (soft squishy)

Q

Cerebrospinal Fluid

A
  • cushions the brain and spinal cord
  • makes the tissues effective mass lower (like they’re floating)
  • lumbar puncher (ouch) to extract some (don’t take too much)

Q

Cranial fossa

A
  • the inside of the skill (isnt smooth)
  • Anterior cranial fossa (Front of the head)
  • posterior cranial fossa (back bottom of the head)
middle cranial fossa (between the two)
  • its the floor of the cranial cavity and it is not smooth

Q

meningeal blood supply

A
  • anterior meningeal artery ( irrigates the meninges in the anterior cranial fossa
  • middle meningeal artery (irrigates the meninges in the middle cranial fossa)
  • posterior meningeal artery ( irrigates the meninges in the posterior cranial fossa)

Q

blood supply of the brain

A
  • left and right internal carotid arteries ascend in the neck to enter the skull through the carotid canal
  • left and right vertebral arteries ascend in the neck to ender the skull through the foramen magnum to supply blood to the brain parenchyma

Q

circle of willis

A
  • bypasses blood flow int eh event of a blockage (stroke)
  • evolutionary adaptation
  • the joining area of several arteries at he bottom side of the brain
  • located at the base of the brain

Q

meningeal hematomas

A
  • subdural hematomas - caused by bleeding of bridging veins across the subdural space. blood collects between the dura mater and the arachnoid space resulting in increased intracranial pressure
  • epidural hematoma - caused by bleeding of meningeal arteries resulting in blood pooling between the dura mater and the skull

Q

Pterion

A
  • weakest parts of the skull
  • region of the lateral skull - at the junction of 4 skull bones
  • a part of the meningeal artery runs under the pterion
  • rapid accelerations/deceleration caused by traumatic blow can rupture the MMA causing an epidural hematoma
