Parts of the Nervous System Flashcards
Nervous System
What are bundles of Axons called in the PNS
Nerves
What are bundles of Axons called in the CNS
Tracts (Fibre Tracts)
What are bundles of Neurons called in the PNS
Ganglia
What are bundles of Neurons called in the CNS
Nucleus
What are the two components of the Peripheral nervous system and what are their functions
(Somatic)
- Voluntary movements
- Interaction with external environment
(Autonomic)
- Involuntary Processes
- Regulation of internal environment
What is the purpose of the sympathetic nervous system
Fight to Flight reactions
- Mobilizes energy resources
- Increase heart rate, dilated pupils…
What is the purpose of the parasympathetic nervous system
Rest and Digest reaction
- acts to conserve energy
- Decrease heart rate, constricts pupils…
Afferent Nerve function
“Towards the brain”
- signals from organs, sensory/motor receptors to the CNS
Efferent Nerve Function
“Away from Brain”
- Carry signals from CNS to PNS
What is the purpose of the Enteric nervous system
Located in the walls of the intestines
- Regulates functions of the digestive system
- Secretion
-Controls blood flow in digestive system
- Peristalsis
What are the layers that surround the CNS and what are their functions
The Meninges
- Contains pain receptors that a brain doesn’t
- Contains lots of blood vessels (Swells to cause migraine/headaches)
What are the names of the of the 3 layers
(Outer to Inner)
- Dura Mater, Arachnoid Mater, Pia Mater -
- Subarachnoid space between the arachnoid and Pia where CSF is present.
What are the functions of the Ventricles
- Shock absorption (cushioning)
- 4 interconnected cavities that contains CSF
What is the function of Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF)
Transports of nutrients and waste
- Flushed out waste product
What are the components of Grey Matter
Composed of neuron cell bodies, dendrites and glial cells
- organized in layers or nuclei
