What does the mouth do?
The teeth break the food down.
Then saliva is mixed with the food, allowing it to be swallowed.
What does the esophagus do?
Pushes the food from the mouth to the stomach. It does so in muscular waves.
What is the process where muscular waved push food along the oesophagus called?
Peristalsis.
How does the stomach hold food?
It is a muscular bag that can expand when lots of food is in it.
How long does food stay in the stomach for?
Approx. 4 hours.
How is food digested in the stomach?
By constant stomach contractions.
What acid is released form the glands?
Hydrochloride acid.
What does hydrochloric acid do?
Kills germs. Provides the correct pH for protein to be digested.
What conditions does protease only work in?
Acidic conditions.
What is the duodenum?
The first part of the small intestine.
Where is bile made and stored?
Made in the liver, stored in the gall bladder.
