Digestion Flashcards
What are most foods made up of?
Insoluble molecules
What happens to the food before it can be taken into the blood stream.
The must be digested in to small, soluble molecules.
What is ingestion?
Food taken into the mouth.
What is digestion?
Food broken down into simple substances.
What is absorption?
Soluble products being absorbed into the bloodstream and taken round the body.
What is assimilation?
Soluble products are taken into cells, where they are used.
What is egestion?
Removal of waste.
What are the two types of digestion?
Mechanical digestion and chemical digestion.
What is mechanical digestion?
When food is broken down by the teeth and tongue and the churned by muscular movements in the stomach.
What is chemical digestion?
When food is broken down by enzymes.
What are enzymes?
They help to break food down into simple and soluble substances.
Enzymes can only control one reaction.
To digest different types of food different enzymes are needed.
What does the amylase enzyme do?
Breaks down carbohydrates
What does the protease enzyme do?
Breaks down proteins into amino acids.
What does the lipase enzyme do?
Breaks food down into fatty acids and glycerol.
