Parts of the Brain Flashcards
Cerebral Cortex - Function
permanent storage of declarative memories (explicit)
Cerebral Cortex - Damage
- Amnesia
- Forgetting
Hippocampus - Function
consolidation of declarative memories and temporary LTM storage
Hippocampus - Damage
- stress, alcohol, drugs
- unable to form new declarative LTMs
Amygdala - Function
consolidation of implicit emotional memories
Amygdala - Damage
- if removed - unable to feel fear
Cerebellum - Function
- procedural (implicit) memories
Cerebellum - Damage
- impairment of ‘how to’ skills
Substantia Nigra
stores and releases dopamine
Basal Ganglia
procedural memories in medial temporal lobe
Suprachiasmic Nucleus
activated by light and activates the pineal gland, involved in regulation of sleep
Hypothalamus
medial temporal lobe - involved in arousal, stressor -> activates pituitary gland
Pituitary Gland
medial temporal lobe - releases ACTH -> activates adrenal glands -> arousal
Pineal Gland
regulates sleep by storing and releasing melatonin
