Parts of a Typical Long Bone Flashcards
What is the medullary cavity, and what does it contain?
The space surrounded by the cortex of a long bone. It contains red marrow in young animals and yellow marrow in mature animals.
What is the epiphysis?
The end of a long bone.
What is the diaphysis?
The cylindrical shaft between two epiphyses.
What is the metaphysis?
The flared area adjacent to the epiphysis, the widest part of a bone.
What is the periosteum, and what is its function?
A fibrous membrane covering the surface of the bone (except articular surfaces). It contains osteoblasts responsible for increasing bone diameter.
What is the endosteum, and what does it contain?
A membrane lining the marrow cavity, containing osteoclasts that regulate marrow cavity size.
What is articular cartilage?
A thin layer of hyaline cartilage covering the articular surfaces of bones, reducing friction in joints.
