Classification of Bones Flashcards
What are short bones, and where are they found?
Cuboid-shaped bones equal in all dimensions, found in complex joints such as carpal and tarsal bones.
What are long bones, and what is their function?
Cylindrical bones longer in one dimension. They function as levers and support locomotion and prehension. Examples: humerus, radius, ulna.
What are flat bones, and what do they protect?
Thin bones expanded in two dimensions, protecting vital organs. Examples: skull, scapula, pelvic bones.
What are irregular bones?
Unpaired bones with prominent processes, providing protection, support, and muscle attachment. Example: vertebrae.
What are sesamoid bones, and what is their function?
Resembling sesame seeds, they reduce friction, increase leverage, or change the direction of pull. Example: patella.
What are pneumatic bones, and in which species are they commonly found?
Bones with air spaces or sinuses, commonly found in birds.
