Parts of a Saddle Flashcards
What part of the saddle is the “skeleton” of the saddle?
Tree. The tree is the starting point of every saddle. Every other part is designed to match the tree.
What part of the saddle creates a tunnel underneath it?
Gullet. The saddle should make a 2 to 4 inch gap. If the gullet doesn’t fit right the horse will not be comfortable.
What part of the saddle is to help stabilize the rider while getting on or off the horse?
Horn, or pommel. The horn is also there so a rider can attach a rope to it when roping a cow or other animal. A roping saddle sometimes has a larger horn while a barrel racing saddle might have a forward slanting horn since the rider leans forward often.
What part of the saddle tells you its western 100% of the time?
Horn. A western saddle always has a work while an English saddle does not.
What part of the saddle to you sit on?
Seat. The seat is behind the horn and directly on top of the tree. There are three slopes of seats: high, medium and low.
What part of the saddle is behind the seat?
Cantle. The cantle extends out from the back of the seat and provides additional support to the rider. It can have multiple sizes depending on the purpose of the saddle.
What part of the saddle sits under the seat of the saddle?
Skirt. The skirt goes between the seat and horse pad. The skirt helps to balance the saddle by distributing weight evenly.
What does a rigging do?
The rigging is composed of multiple parts: the cinch, 2 D rings, the latigo and the off billet strap. This secures the saddle to the horse, underneath.
Where do the riders feet go when they are riding?
Stirrups. Stirrups help a rider get on and off a horse and help provide stability while riding.
What part of the saddle keeps it from sliding backwards?
Breastplate. The breastplate connects between the front legs to the cinch and to the D rings on the saddle.
