Parts of a Cell Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
Structure: a double layer of lipids(phospholipids, cholesterol, etc) containing proteins within it
Function: an external barrier that transports substances into and out of the cell
Cytoplasm
Structure: a dense, compact liquid
Function: to hold the organelles within a cell
Mitochondria
Function: Site of ATP synthesis
Ribosomes
Function: site of protein synthesis
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function: protein synthesis, as the ribosomes are located on it
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function: produces and metabolizes fats and steroid hormones
Golgi Apparatus
Function: packages and transports proteins
Peroxisomes
Function: breaks down toxic substances in the cell
Lysosomes
Function: digestive system of the cell
Microtubules
Function: supports the cell and gives it shape
Microfilaments
Function: involved in muscle contraction and other intracellular movement
Intermediate filaments
Function: resists mechanical forces acting on the cell
Centrioles
Function: a microtubule network used during mitosis
Cilia
Function: coordinate movement to create a unidirectional current to propel substances across the cells surface
Flagellum
Function: propel the cell
