what is a one party system?
where one dominant party has power and dominates, no opposition
what is a two party system?
2 dominant equally matched parties compete for power, other parties have little chance of gaining power
what is a two and a half party system?
distribution of power where a 3rd smaller party can sometimes hold the balance of power between the two more dominant parties
what is a multi party system?
system where power is distributed between multiple parties that all have a large degree of significance
what are the arguments that there is not a multi party system, still 2 party?
-class based voting for Labour + Tories, hard for smaller parties to breakthrough
-periods of one party dominance, Blair, Thatcher
