Particles Model of Matter Flashcards
What is the kinetic theory of Solids?
fixed regular arrangement, little energy so can only vibrate.
What is the kinetic theory of Liquids?
Randomly arranged, have more energy so can move around each other.
What is the kinetic theory of Gases?
Randomly arranged, lots of energy so move around in all different directions.
What is density?
The mass per unit volume.
How to calculate density?
density = mass/volume
Name 3 properties of a liquid.
not rigid, no fixed shape, fixed volume.
Name 3 properties of a solid.
Rigid, fixed shape, fixed volume.
Name 3 properties of a gas.
not rigid, no fixed shape, no fixed volume.
What is the displacement method?
Find the mass of object on a balance, measure the volume of water without object, then measure with. Subtract the volume of the water with the object by the volume without to find out the density of the object. Calculate density by mass/volume.
How to find out the density of a regular object?
Find the mass using a balance, calculate the volume by finding out the length, height and width and multiply them together. Calculate density by mass/volume.
Why do particles in both liquids and gases move randomly?
They are bombarded by other moving particles in the fluid. This is called the Brownian Motion.
What is the difference between a low temperature contained gas and a high temperature contained gas?
The gas molecules in a low temperature are free to move and have no intermolecular forces, while the gas molecules in a high temperature move much faster with high kinetic energy. The molecules have more internal energy.
