Energy Resources Flashcards
What is a non-renewable energy?
An energy that will run out, it damages the environment but provides most of the energy in the world.
What is a renewable energy?
An energy that will never run out, however it is unreliable and does not provide as much energy.
Give examples of a non-renewable energy. (4)
Coal, oil, gas (fossil fuels) and nuclear.
Give examples of a renewable energy. (7)
Solar, Geothermal, wind, hydroelectric, wave power, tidal barrages, and biofuels.
What is the National Grid?
A system of transmission cables and transformers. They transfer electrical power from the power station to where it is needed.
What is a step-up transformer?
They increase the voltage the electricity flows through.
What is a step-down transformer?
They decrease the voltage to make it safe.
Why is electricity transferred at a low current?
A low current but high voltage so less energy is lost as the electricity travels through the cable.
How to calculate work done?
Work done = force x distance
How to calculate energy transferred?
energy transferred = power x time
