Particles and Nuclides Flashcards
What is specific charge?
Charge of particle/ mass of a particle
What is an isotope
nuclei with the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons
What is the strong Nuclear force?
a very short ranged fundamental force that acts between nucleons
repulsive below 0.4Fm and attractive up to 3Fm
What is a neutrino?
a neutral massless sub-atomic particle that rarely interacts with matter.
How were neutrinos discovered?
The energy for a beta particle isn’t equal to the kinetic energy of beta particles, so there must be extra energy from a neutrino.
How can you detect radiation?
A cloud chamber artificially creates clouds by expanding air saturated with water. The radiation then leaves tracks in the clouds, which are visible to the naked eye.
What is Rest mass energy?
the amount of energy released by converting all mass to energy.
What is an antiparticle
A particle of opposite charge but the same mass.
What happens when a particle meets its corresponding anti-particle?
They annihilate each other and the total mass of each is converted into two gamma ray photons, two are produced in order to conserve momentum.
What is pair production?
When a photon with enough energy interacts with a large nucleus and can be converted directly into a particle - antiparticle pair.
