Materials Flashcards
What is density?
mass per unit volume
What’s a compressive force?
a force that reduces an objects size, in the direction force was applied in.
What’s a tensile force
a force that act to pull or stretch an object
What is hookes Law?
Extension is proportional to force
F = spring constant * extension
What is the spring constant?
A measure of how hard it is to bend or stretch a spring. The larger k is, the larger the stiffness is.
What is the limit of proportionality?
The point when the extension is no longer proportional to the load applied
What is the Elastic limit?
The load above which the material is permanently deformed.
What is an elastic material
When a material returns to its original dimensions, when the load is removed.
Whats a plastic material?
When a material doesn’t return to its original dimensions, when a load is removed(permanently deformed)
What is ductility?
the ability of a material to become a wire, by stretching them.
What is a brittle material?
A material that shows little deformation, before breaking.
What is work done in materials?
Average force*extension
What is elastic strain energy?
The energy stored by stretched materials
1/2 * F * extension
What is tensile Stress?
Force/ cross sectional-area (Pa or Nm^-1)
What is tensile strain?
Extension / original length
