Particles Flashcards
Describe a Solid
Cannot be compressed
Cannot flow
Has a fixed shape
High density
Low energy
Describe a liquid
Cannot be compressed
Can flow
Takes the shape of the bottom of the container
Describe a Gas
Can be compressed
Can flow
Spread out and fills up the whole container
Low density
High energy
Why does a substance not get hotter when melting/boiling?
The heat energy is being used to overcome the forces between the particles rather then making the substance hotter
What is the melting/boiling point?
The temperature at which the substance turns from a solid to a liquid/liquid to gas when heated
Describe Gas pressure
Gas pressure is caused by particles colliding with the walls of a container
Can increase by:
-> Increasing the number of gas particles
-> Increasing the temperature
-> Decreasing the volume of container
