particle theory and diffusion Flashcards
what are the 2 properties of solids and reasons for them?
1) they have a fixed shape because of their regular pattern so they can’t move from place to place but can vibrate
2) they can’t be compressed as the particles have no space to move into
what are the 2 properties of liquids and reasons for them?
1) they flow and take the shape of the container as the particles are close together but can move around each other
2) they can’t be compressed as the particles have no space to move into
what are the 2 properties of gases and reasons for them?
1) they flow and fill the container as the the particles are far apart and move quickly in all directions
2) they can be compressed as the particles have space to move into
what is the name of the changes of states: gas to liquid, liquid to solid, and solid to gas?
condensation, freezing, sublimation
what is the name of the changes of states: solid to liquid, liquid to gas, and gas to solid?
melting, evaporation, sublimation
how does diffusion occur?
when a gas is release into a room, it’s particles are free to move in all directions. the gas particles collide with air particles and eventually they spread through the whole room
what’s diffusion called when in water?
osmosis
what effect’s diffusion’s speed?
1) particle energy - faster at higher temperatures and in liquids
2) particle mass - the heavier the particle the slower the diffusion
