PARTICLE THEORY 2 Flashcards
What is the process to answer a question scientifically.
observation, forming a hypothesis, making a prediction, conducting an experiment and finally analyzing the results
3 properties of table salt
Transparent and colourless in crystalline form
3 examples of pure substance
Water
Gold
Hydrogen
Are elements or compound pure substances?
Elements and compounds are both examples of pure substances
3 examples of mixture
Apple Juice - homogeneous mixture
Crude oil - heterogeneous mixture
Gunpowder - heterogeneous mixture
Can you make a solution by mixing 2 solids together?
Yes you can by melting them, mixing and then re-solidify them
Why do some substances dissolve and other don’t
Dissolving happens when the attraction between the particles of the solvent and solute are strong enough to overcome the attraction of the particles of the solute for one another
How does temperature affect solubility?
The first way is by increasing the movement of the solute particles. The faster the solute particles move, the better their chances of interacting with more solvent particles. The second way is by weakening the intermolecular forces of the solute particles.
How does stirring a solute or the surface area of the solute affect solubility?
When you stir a solution, you are essentially breaking up the solute particles into smaller pieces, which exposes more of the solute to the solvent.
How can a supersaturated solution be made?
Heat it to increase solubility, then slowly cool it down.
How to separate Oil and Water
Decanting
How to separate Salt and water?
Distillation
How to get rid of the pulp in orange juice.
Filtration
How are separation techniques used in the industry in the real world?
To produce 1 L of maple syrup, 40 L of water must be separated by evaporation
