Particle Theory Flashcards
What are all materials made up of
Particles
Which particles have the strongest and which have the weakest attraction
Solids are the strongest and gases are the weakest
What is the movement of particles in a solid?
Vibrating from side to side
What is the movement of particles in a liquid and gases?
Moving about
What determines the speed at which particles move?
Temperature. The higher the temp the faster they move!
What is temp related to?
The kinetic energy of the particles.
Which particles have the most and least kinetic energy at a given temp
Gases have the most and solids have the least
Solids Liquids Gases. Can they FLOW across pipes easily?
Solids NO Liquid YES Gas YES
Solids Liquids Gases. Can they be compressed easily.
Solid NO Liquid NO Gas YES
Solids Liquids Gases. Do they take the shape of the container the are in?
Solid No Liquid Yes but there is always a flat surface at the top. Gases YES
Solids Liquids Gases. Do they spread out easily?
Solids NO Liquids NO gases YES
Solids Liquids Gases. Do they have a constant shape?
Solids YES Liquids NO Gases NO
Solids Liquids Gases. Do they have a constant volume?
Solids YES Liquids YES Gases NO- depends on the vessel they are put in
Solids Liquids Gases. Do they have a constant volume?
Solids YES Liquids YES Gases NO- depends on the vessel they are put in
How are solids arranged?
In a regular 3D pattern. Each particle touches its near neighbours.
How are liquids arranged?
Randomly. The particles are still close together. There are some gaps, but about half the particles still touch one another.
How are gases arranged?
Randomly. The particle are far apart from one another.
How do solids move and how fast are they?
They vibrate around fixed positions. No free movement.
Slowly vibrate cannot move freely
How do liquids move and how fast are they?
Freely and randomly. They can change places easily even thought they are close together.
Faster movement
How do gases move and how fast are they?
Freely and randomly
Very fast movement
Solids Liquids and Gases. How strong is the attraction between them?
Solids VERY STRONG Liquids STRONG Gas VERY WEAK
