Magnets and electromagnets Flashcards
What is a magnet? eg
A magnet is an object that can exert a non contact force on a magnetic material at a distance. e.g. iron steel nickel colbat
What repel and what no?
Opposite poles attract and magnetic materials with attract to either pole
Properties of Soft materials
Easy to magnetise and demagnetise
Will behave like a magnet only when it is in a magnetic field
Properties of Hard Magnet
Hard to magnetise and demagnetise
Will become pregnant magnets when they are magnetised
Permanently magnetic
What happens when you cut a bar magnet in half
More bar magnets are made
What is a magnetic field line?
Magnetic field lines show the field with the arrow pointing towards south (away from north)
What is a magnetic field?
A magnetic field is an area around a magnet where magnetic objects will experience a force.
2 common ways to detect field lines
Plotting compasses and Iron fillings
What is a solenoid
A coil of wire
How do you make an electromagnet stronger
Increasing the current
Increasing the no. of turns of the wire
Putting iron into the middle of the solenoid
What is the right hand grip rule
The right hand grip rule shows the direction of the magnetic field(arrows point south)
Thumb point in the direction of the current
Other fingers in the direction of the field
How is an electromagnet created
By passing a current through a coil of wire
