Particle Physics Flashcards
Describe with evidence the deduction made from the alpha particle scattering experiment.
Most alpha particles passed straight showing that it is an empty space.
Some deflected by small angles showing that the nucleus is positive
Some deflect by large angles showing that he nucleus is very small and this is where the mass and charge is concentrated
What are the three types of decay?
Alpha decay
Beta decay
Gamma decay
How alpha decay change the element?
Proton number decreases by 2
Nucleon number decreases by 4
B- decay
Neutron decays to form a proton, electron and antineutrino
Proton number increase by 1.
B+ decay
When a proton decays into a neutron, positron and neutrino
Antimatter
All particles have a corresponding antiparticle which have the same mass but opposite charge
What is the antimatter for an electron?
Positron
Which particles are fundamental particles?
All leptons: Electrons positrons Neutrinos antineutrinos
