particle motion in gases Flashcards
what happens when you increase the temperature of a gas?
you transfer energy into the kinetic energy stores of its particles and the average speed of its particles increase
what happens when gas particles move at high speeds?
the collide with each other
what is the outward gas pressure in a sealed container?
the total force exerted by all of the particles in the gas on a unit area of the container walls
what happens if the volume is kept constant?
faster particles, frequent collisions, more pressure and increasing temperature
what happens if the temperature is constant?
increasing volume of gas, particles spread out, less collisions and pressure decreases
what is the relationship between pressure and volume?
they are inversely proportional-when volume goes up, pressure goes down
what does a pressure of gas cause?
a net outwards force at right angles to the surface of its container
what do the forces on the outside of the container do?
change the container size, compress or expand
what does doing work on a gas do?
increases its internal energy, which can increase its temperature
how do you work against a force?
gas applies pressure to the plunger of a pump an exerts a force on it, work has been done against this force
how do you work out a constant?
pressure x volume
