conduction and convection Flashcards
what is conduction?
the process where vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
where does conduction normally occur?
in solids
how does conduction work?
by heating one end of an object the particles vibrate and collide with each other, these collisions cause energy to transfer throughout the object
what is thermal conductivity?
a measure of how quickly a object conducts
what is convection?
energetic particles move away from hotter to cooler regions
where does convection occur?
only in liquids and gases
how is energy transferred in convection?
by heating to the thermal store of the liquid or gas, energy is shared across the particles and the particles move faster, space between them increases, causing the density of the region being heated to increase
what is an example of a convection current and how does it work?
radiators, energy transfers from the radiator to nearby particles and the area becomes less dense, causing those particles to move to the cooler side of the room and the cool air sinks getting heated by the radiator
