density of materials Flashcards
what is density?
a measure of the compactness of a substance
how do you calculate density?
density = mass / volume
what does the density of an object depend on?
what it’s made of and how its particles are arranged
what is a dense material?
its particles are packed tightly together
what is a less dense material?
particles that are more spread out (if you compressed the material it would become dense)
what are the qualities of solids?
strong forces of attrition hold the particles close together in a fixed regular arrangement, density is the highest
what are the qualities of liquids?
weaker forces of attraction between particles, close together but can move past each other, less dense
what are the qualities of gases?
almost no forces of attraction between particles, more energy and free to move, fast travelling, low densities
how do you find the density of a solid object?
first measure the mass, if its regular you can measure it and work out the volume, if its irregular you can work the volume by submerging it in a eureka can, the water displaced will be the volume of the object
how do you find the density of a liquid?
measure the mass of a certain volume of you liquid then repeat the process until you can work out an average
