Particle motion in gases Flashcards
How do gases move?
constantly moving in random directions at high speeds
What happens when u increase the temperature of a gas?
You transfer energy into the kinetic store
What happens when gases move at high speeds?
They collide into each other and the surfaces of the container
What is pressure?
The force exerted on a surface during collisions. In a sealed container, this is the total force exerted by all of the particles in the gas.
What is Brownian motion?
Describes the random movement of particles in a gas
How do you change the pressure?
- Change volume
- Change temperature
- Number of particles
What is Boyle’s law?
“For a fixed mass of gas, at a constant temperature, the product of pressure and volume is equal to a constant”
What is the equation between pressure and volume?
Constant = pressure x volume
pv = constant
What is the relationship between a fixed mass and volume?
Inversely proportional
By rearranging equations, what equations can u make?
pv = constant
pressure = y axis
volume = x axis
gradient = p/v
gradient = pv = contant
gradient = constant
