Internal energy Flashcards
What is the temperature of ‘Absolute zero’ ?
-273.15°c
What happens at ‘Absolute zero’ ?
Particles/atoms have no kinetic energy and do not move at all.
What is internal energy?
The total kinetic and potential energy of all the particles in the system.
Why do particles in solids, liquids and gasses all move?
They all have kinetic energy
What does potential energy do in particles?
This opposes forces attracting them together so therefore keeps particles seperated.
Which particles are furthest apart?
Gas particles
What increases internal energy?
Increasing the temperature
What happens when gas particles crash into each other?
They exert force
What happens when the particles get faster and collide more?
Increase in net force and gas pressure
What does increasing temperature do?
- Increase the speed, number of collisions so does the pressure
- Changes state
