Particle Model Flashcards
What’s an element?
A pure substance made up of only one type of atom.
What’s a molecule?
A group of atoms attached by chemical bonds.
What’s a compound.
A molecule composed of two or more different elements. (Bonded together).
What’s a property?
It’s any characteristic of a substance.
- they can be physical or chemical
- they can be qualitative or quantitative
What’s a physical property?
It’s without changing what the thing is.
Name 5 characteristic properties. (For physical properties).
- colour
- odour
- density
- melting point
- boiling point
What’s a chemical property?
It’s how two substances react with each other. It’s creating something new or changing a substance.
Name 5 chemical properties.
- flammability
- reacts with water
- reacts with acid
- reacts with oxygen
- resistance to corrosion
What’s a non characteristic property?
It’s when physical and chemical properties cannot identify a specific substance.
How do you identify a solid based on physical properties?
It’s with the graduated cylinder……(calculate the density D=M/V
What’s a sign of a chemical change?
Colour change.
What’s the scale for acids and bases?
It’s a scale from 1-14.
On the scale, what is it for bases?
8-14
On the scale, what is it for acids?
1-6
What’s an atom?
The smallest unit of matter.
