Nutrition+Energy Flashcards
What forms of energy does the body mainly need?
*Chemical, *thermal, and mechanical.
Why do we need chemical energy?
To get energy for thermal and mechanical uses.
Why do we need thermal energy?
To maintain homeostasis.
What’s homeostasis?
The process of maintaining a constant internal environment despite changes in the external environment. (So it’s stable)
Why do we need mechanical energy?
So we can move.
What’s a physical change?
The molecules are just in a different place.
Physical changes; give an example of a change of shape.
Masticating or peristalsis.
Physical changes; give an example of a change in state.
Ice melting into water in the mouth.
What’s a chemical change?
The molecules you have started with are now new/different molecules.
What’s synthesis?
When you make/build a new molecule.
What’s deconposition?
When you’re breaking down/separating bonds within a molecule.
What’s oxidation?
Reaction involving atmospheric oxygen (O2)
What’s a carbohydrate?
Sugar.
What’s the function of a carbohydrate?
Energy production of starch.
Give 5 examples of carbohydrates.
1) bread
2) pasta
3) rice
4) fruits
5) vegetables
What’s a lipid?
Fat.
What’s the function of a lipid/fat?
Energy production and storage. Carries fat soluble vitamins D, E, A, K.
What’s a brain insulation?
Fat.
What function does protein have?
It’s to build and maintain cells.
What’s are the tools of the cells?
Protein.
**What are vitamins and minerals used for?
**It’s used to regulate and help with chemical reactions in the cell.
What’s the function of water?
It’s to maintain the structure of cells. And it’s essential for the movement of the body.
What’s the function of oxygen?
It’s required to burn sugar and fat to produce energy.
Is fibre a nutrient?
No. The body cannot digest it.
What does fibre do?
It cleans out everything.
What is energy?
The ability to do work.
