Participants and sampling Flashcards
Participants
People who take part of a psychological study
Representative sample
A sample that represents a population
Sampling methods
Opportunity sampling, self selected sample, snowball sampling, snowball sampling, random sampling, stratified sampling
Opportunity sampling
A sample of whoever happens to be there and agrees to participate
Strengths of opportunity sampling
Easy to find participants
Weaknesses of opportunity sampling
Leads to biased results; problematic to generalise
Self selected sampling
Made up of volunteers
Strengths of self selected sampling
Relatively easy to obtain; guaranteed that the sample is highly motivated
Weaknesses of self selected sampling
Difficult to make generalisations
Snowball sampling
Participants recruit other participants
Strengths of snowball sampling
Can access research participants
Weaknesses of snowball sampling
Participant variability
Random sampling
Every member of the target population has an equal change of getting chosen
Strengths of random sampling
Most desirable - if the sample is large enough, it has all the characteristics of the population and easier to generalise
Weaknesses of random sampling
Can overrepresent a population
