Part Two: First Principles Flashcards
chromatic gray
has relatively low saturation but still have a discernible temperature and hue.
muted colors
colors falling between chromatic grays and prismatic colors. Can be characterized as softer than prismatic colors, but they still have a discernible hue.
color temperature
an aspect of hue that’s contingent upon its
surroundings and likely based on psychological associations we make with elements in nature, such as ice and fire. The colors can be divided into cool and warm tones.
value continuum
represents the infinite values from black to white.
grayscale
a representation of the value continuum broken down into finite number of steps.
saturation continuum
represents the infinite levels of saturation that exist between any two intermixed complementary colors.
prismatic colors
represents the hues of the spectrum. They are, categorically, at the highest level of saturation.
achromatic grays
means “without color”. No hue and no saturation, only value. The term applies to black, white, and grays made by combing black and white.
tint
the result of mixing any color with white.
shade
the result of mixing any color with black.
inherent light
a visual quality that depends upon relative saturation and context
monochromatic
a color scheme limited to one hue and variations thereof. They can have a broad range of values or saturation levels.
analogous
hues that lie adjacent to each other on the spectrum.
triadic
a color relationship that is comprised of any three equidistant hues on the color wheel.
warm colors
red, yellow, and orange.
