Part II Flashcards
Dehydration synthesis
Monomers bond to form polymers. Water is RELEASED
Name the four categories of organic molecules
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acid
What three characteristics do all organic molecules have in common?
1) All contain C, H, and O
2) Built from monomers
3) Form determines function
Macromolecules vs polymers
Macromolecule is a type of polymer
What is a hydrocarbon?
Molecules only containing H and C
What is the function of Amylose?
Stores energy in plants
What is the function of glycogen?
Stores energy in animals
What is the function of cellulose?
Forms cell walls in plants
What is the function of Chitin?
Forms exoskeletons in some animals
What is a monosaccharide?
Simple sugars
Contain C, H, and O
What are examples of monosaccharides?
Fructose, galactose, and glucose
When glucose and fructose combine, what is formed?
Sucrose
What is a disaccharide?
A macromolecule formed from bonding of 2 sugar monomers
What are examples of disaccharides?
Sucrose, lactose, and maltose
Lactose consists of what two monomers bonded together?
Galactose + glucose
